How the **** do you get the rear brake piston back in?

Postby themaster » Fri Jun 11, 2010 9:21 pm

I've been a complete eejit with the rear brake (o/s). Basically the discs and pads were properly shagged ... I successfully replaced the disc, but can't get the piston back in. How does it go back in?

I was trying to push the bugger back in with a C clamp but it wouldn't budge.

I then proceeded to be a bigger idiot, but I'll keep quiet about that unless it's caused further problems

1997 Triumph Daytona 900, black : loudish pipes; sounds ace.
2001 SAAB 9-5 Aero Estate, grey : piece of sh*t. Standard, smokey and underboosting at the moment.

OK.

The full story is I took it for a drive after hammering the calliper back on, thought it was still binding so, for some reason, decided to measure how much by touching the brake disc. See. I said I was a complete eejit.

Mercifully it came off reasonably easy.

However, Jim kindly reckons:

... where? If it's "in" the piston, said allen socket is either not there or has rusted over. In which case .. new piston or new calliper (you can tell I'm not exactly the world's best, er, 'fitter' :P) If not ... where is it?

Ta in advance as ever :)

the little circled cover is unscrewed using an allen key and then inside is the adjuster which is turned using an allen key .

also when you reassembly the brakes adjust this adjuster untill the pads just start to bind and then back it off a little, otherwise the handbrake will be too loose and the foot pedal may have a long travel. while your doing the brakes its very worth renewing all brake fluid, they will work much better without the water but more importantly prevents expensive calipers from seizing up due to corrosion on the inside.

Thanks very much - now all done.

Sorry for being thick -- I had removed that allen bolt thinking it was the adjuster ... didn't think the adjuster would be underneath it.

We now have rear brakes. Almost (other side plus final adjustment to do). I had the brake fluid changed in February, so hopefully all good to go tomorrow.
